PROTECTION ORDER

A Protection Order is an Order granted by the Domestic Violence Court which prohibits the person against whom the Order was made, to commit any acts of domestic violence again you. Further, a Court might grant you an Interim Protection Order - which will be finalised later - with basically the same effect as a Protection Order.

Domestic violence is often misunderstood and the word causing the confusion is violence. Many people therefore believe that there must be battery and bloodshed in their home before this term applies to them. However, this is not the case, as can be seen hereunder.

The Act describes Domestic Violence as:

• physical abuse
• sexual abuse
• emotional, verbal and psychological abuse
• economic abuse
• intimidation
• harassment
• stalking
• damage to property
• entry into the complainant’s residence without consent, where the parties do not share the same residence
• any other controlling or abusive behaviour towards a complainant
